As part of of detox retreats, and also on our fitness holidays, we include information and discussions about detox because we believe that the more our clients understand, the more they will realise the importance of the things we teach. We want our clients to go home healthier, but also with new knowledge.

We have all heard of detox diets. Detox or detoxification is body natural, ongoing process of neutralizing and eliminating toxins from the body. So, our bodies are designed to be capable of doing this naturally. But this natural process can often be inhibited with unhealthy eating patterns and bad food choices. Toxins can potentially harm body tissue, including waste products that result from normal cell activity. The liver, intestines, kidneys, lungs, skin, blood and lymphatic systems work together to ensure that toxins are transformed chemically to less harmful compounds and excreted from the body.

For example, for use in the USA are registered approximately 80,000 synthetic chemicals. Hundreds of them are present in our bodies. Those chemicals can confuse and disorganize our immune, as well as nervous, endocrine and reproductive systems, also can trig conditions, like stuffy head, fatigue, insomnia, gastrointestinal problems, weight gain as a result of food cravings, brain fog, low libido.

Generally, we can split all toxins for two types:

External toxins: air and water pollutants, caffeine, tobacco smoke, cosmetics, household and cleaning supplies, pesticides and herbicides, food preservatives, pharmaceuticals (medications).

Liver – it filters toxins; aids the body in metabolizing fat, protein and carbohydrates; helps transform many toxins into harmless agents.

Kidneys – filter out waste and excess fluid from the blood; regulate and release the right balance of sodium, phosphorus and potassium for the body to function rightly.

Small intestine – digests food so that nutrients can be absorbed into the blood and transported to the liver; provides a barrier that blocks toxins from the rest of the body.

Large intestines – absorbs water and electrolytes and forms waste that is excreted from the body; produces antibodies for gastrointestinal health; contains bacterium that create fatty acids and some vitamins for additional nutritional support.

Certainly detox diets can help with weight loss, but this is unsurprising because calorie intakes are usually extremely low. Detox diets cutting out major groups of foods such as dairy products, meat and wheat-based foods. Therefore it means you’ll slash the amount of calories you have – and only replace a few of these calories with the extra fruit and veg you eat. The amount of weight you can expect to lose will vary according to the severity of the dietary restriction – the more foods that are banned, the more weight you are likely to lose.
